Working With the Moon: Phases, Signs and Your Monthly Rhythm
The Moon is the fastest-moving body in astrology and the easiest to watch with your own eyes. Many people follow its phases to plan intentions, rest or reflection. Fewer realise the Moon is running two separate cycles at the same time — and that combining them gives a much richer picture.
Cycle one: the phases
The Moon’s phase is the shape of its lit portion as seen from Earth. It depends on the angle between the Sun, Earth and Moon, and a full cycle from one new moon to the next takes about 29.5 days.
- New Moon: dark; a time for setting intentions.
- Waxing Crescent: a thin sliver; first steps.
- First Quarter: half lit; decisions and obstacles.
- Waxing Gibbous: nearly full; refining and preparing.
- Full Moon: fully lit; culmination and clarity.
- Waning Gibbous: sharing and gratitude.
- Last Quarter: release and clearing.
- Waning Crescent: rest and recovery.
The Moon Phase Calendar shows tonight’s phase and the dates of the next full and new moons.
Cycle two: the signs
Meanwhile, the Moon moves through all twelve zodiac signs in about 27.3 days, spending roughly two and a half days in each. Astrologers read the Moon’s sign as the emotional flavour of those days.
- Moon in fire signs: energetic, spontaneous, restless.
- Moon in earth signs: steady, practical, comfort-seeking.
- Moon in air signs: sociable, talkative, curious.
- Moon in water signs: sensitive, intuitive, reflective.
Why the two cycles do not line up
Because the phase cycle (29.5 days) and the sign cycle (27.3 days) have different lengths, each new moon happens in a different sign. Over a year, the new moon moves through the zodiac roughly in step with the Sun. That is why astrologers speak of a “new moon in Taurus” or a “full moon in Scorpio” — each one carries a different emotional tone.
A full moon always falls in the sign opposite the Sun, which is why full moons are associated with balancing two opposing themes.
Building a monthly rhythm
- At the new moon, take ten quiet minutes to write one or two intentions for the month. Notice the sign: a new moon in Virgo suits practical goals; one in Leo suits creative ones.
- At the first quarter, check progress and adjust plans if something is blocking you.
- At the full moon, review what has developed. Celebrate wins and notice emotions that surface.
- At the last quarter, let go of one thing that is not working — a habit, a commitment, a worry.
Many people find this simple rhythm useful whether or not they take astrology literally, because it builds regular reflection into a busy month.
Your natal Moon
Your birth chart records the Moon’s sign and phase at the moment you were born. Your Moon sign describes your emotional needs; some astrologers also read your birth phase as a clue to temperament. The Moon Sign Finder gives your Moon sign from your birth date, and the Natal Blueprint places it in your houses.
A note on the Moon and wellbeing
Folklore links the full moon with sleeplessness and strong emotions. Research findings on this are mixed, and individual experiences vary widely. Following the Moon can be a pleasant way to reflect, but sleep or mood problems deserve a conversation with a health professional.
