The Twelve Houses
Twelve slices of life, from self-image to secret dreams, where every planet in your chart does its work.
The Stage Where Life Happens
Signs tell you how a planet behaves. Houses tell you where. A planet's house points to the area of life — home, work, relationships, money, friendships — where its energy shows up most.
Without houses, a chart describes personality in general terms. With them, it becomes specific: not just that you are driven, but that your drive is focused on career, or on creative projects, or on family.
That specificity is why astrologers place so much value on an accurate birth time.
How the Twelve Are Measured
Houses are calculated from the horizon at your birthplace. The first house begins at the ascendant, the point of the zodiac rising in the east when you were born, and the others follow around the circle.
Because the Earth rotates, the houses sweep across the sky every twenty-four hours. Two people born on the same day in the same city a few hours apart will have similar planets but different house placements.
Without a birth time there is no way to calculate houses accurately, and honest tools say so.
Reading the Wheel in Pairs
Opposite houses form natural pairs. The first and seventh balance self and partner. The second and eighth balance personal and shared resources. The third and ninth balance everyday learning and broad wisdom.
The fourth and tenth balance home and career. The fifth and eleventh balance personal joy and community. The sixth and twelfth balance daily duty and quiet retreat.
Thinking in pairs makes the twelve houses far easier to remember and interpret.
Empty Houses Are Normal
With ten planets and twelve houses, every chart has at least two empty houses, and most have several. An empty house is not a missing part of life; it simply is not a point of special emphasis.
To read an empty house, look at the sign on its starting cusp and find where that sign's ruling planet sits. That planet becomes the house's representative.
Many people with an empty seventh house have long, happy partnerships, and many with an empty tenth have successful careers.
Choosing a House System
Astrologers use several methods to divide the sky. Placidus, the most popular in the West, divides by time. Whole Sign houses treat each sign as one house. Equal houses divide the circle into twelve equal slices from the ascendant.
The Natal Blueprint uses Placidus and switches to equal houses at very high latitudes, where Placidus cannot be calculated.
If a planet sits right on a house cusp, try reading both houses — the more accurate description often becomes obvious.
