The Restless Moon
Among all the bodies astrology uses, the Moon moves fastest. It travels through the entire zodiac in about twenty-seven days, spending roughly two and a half days in each sign.
That speed makes the Moon sign far more personal than the Sun sign. People born a few days apart often have different Moon signs, even when their Suns match.
It also means that, on some birthdays, the Moon changed sign partway through the day — which is where your birth hour comes in.
When the Hour Decides
On about a third of all days, the Moon crosses from one sign into the next at some point between midnight and midnight. If you were born on one of those days, your Moon sign depends on whether you arrived before or after the crossing.
The Moon Sign Finder calculates the exact time of that crossing in universal time. Enter your birth hour and it gives you a definite answer; leave the hour blank and it tells you both candidate signs and when the change happened.
On the other two-thirds of days, the Moon stays in one sign all day and the hour makes no difference.
What the Moon Sign Describes
In astrology the Moon represents emotional needs, comfort, instinct and memory. It describes how you react before you have time to think and what you need in order to feel safe.
If the Sun is the self you show the world and grow into, the Moon is the self that comes out at home, with the people closest to you.
That is why the Moon sign description often feels surprisingly intimate when people first read it.
When the Moon and Sun Disagree
Most people have their Moon in a different sign from their Sun, and the contrast can explain a great deal. An outgoing Leo Sun with a Virgo Moon may be confident in public yet privately self-critical.
A practical Capricorn Sun with a Pisces Moon may be organised on the surface and deeply imaginative underneath.
Recognising this inner partnership can make sense of feelings that seem to contradict your Sun sign.
How the Calculation Works
The Moon's position is calculated using the main terms of the ELP-2000/82 lunar theory, a standard method in astronomical computation. Its accuracy is far finer than the thirty-degree width of a sign.
