The Four Elements
Fire, earth, air and water: the four temperaments every sign is cut from, and how each one meets the world.
Four Temperaments
The four elements are the oldest and most practical way of grouping the zodiac. Each contains three signs, and each describes a basic way of meeting the world: through action, through practicality, through ideas or through feeling.
A simple test shows how they differ. Give four people the same problem. The fire sign acts immediately, the earth sign calculates the cost, the air sign steps back to analyse, and the water sign notices how everyone in the room is feeling.
Each response is valuable in some situations and costly in others. That is why astrology treats the elements as temperaments rather than ranking them as better or worse.
Fire and Earth
Fire β Aries, Leo and Sagittarius β brings enthusiasm, courage and the willingness to start before everything is certain. Its shadow is impatience and a tendency to lose interest once the excitement fades.
Earth β Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn β brings patience, practicality and the stamina to finish what was started. Its shadow is rigidity, holding on to a plan after circumstances have changed.
These two often work well together in practice: fire supplies the spark and earth supplies the structure, even if each finds the other slightly exasperating.
Air and Water
Air β Gemini, Libra and Aquarius β brings perspective, communication and fairness. Its shadow is intellectualising feelings rather than experiencing them.
Water β Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces β brings empathy, intuition and emotional memory. Its shadow is absorbing moods that belong to other people.
This pair misunderstands each other most easily. Air can see water as overly sensitive; water can see air as detached. Both impressions miss what the other contributes.
Measuring Your Own Balance
Your Sun sign gives you one element, but a full chart contains a mix. Astrologers usually weight the Sun and Moon most heavily, the ascendant next, and the personal planets after that.
The Element Scale in the Fate Forge does this weighting for you. Enter the signs you know and it shows the percentage of each element, which one leads and which one is light.
The light or missing element is often the most revealing result, because it shows a quality you have to work at deliberately rather than one that comes naturally.
Putting the Result to Use
A dominant element shows your natural strengths. A weak element suggests where support might help β a deadline for low fire, a calendar for low earth, a sounding board for low air, a trusted confidant for low water.
Many people are also drawn to partners and friends who carry plenty of the element they lack, which can create wonderfully balanced relationships.
Explore each element on its own page to see how it thinks, loves, works and pairs with the others.
