Venus and Mars Signs: How You Love and How You Chase

When people ask whether two signs are compatible, they usually compare Sun signs. Yet in astrological tradition, the Sun has relatively little to say about romance. The planets most closely tied to attraction and desire are Venus and Mars. Learning yours can explain patterns in your love life that your Sun sign never quite captured.

Venus: what draws you in

Venus describes what you find beautiful, what you value and how you behave once you are attached. It covers taste in people, art, comfort and harmony. Its sign shows your love language in a broad sense.

  • Venus in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) loves boldly and playfully, and is attracted to confidence and adventure.
  • Venus in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) shows love through reliability, touch and practical care, and values loyalty.
  • Venus in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) falls for minds and conversation, and needs friendship within romance.
  • Venus in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) seeks emotional depth and security, and bonds intensely.

Mars: how you go after it

Mars is the drive that moves you toward what you want. It describes desire, courage, ambition and how you handle conflict. In relationships, Mars shows how you pursue, how you flirt and how you argue.

  • Mars in fire signs pursues directly and quickly, and argues hotly but briefly.
  • Mars in earth signs pursues steadily and patiently, and digs in during disagreements.
  • Mars in air signs pursues through wit and words, and argues with logic.
  • Mars in water signs pursues through emotional connection, and may withdraw or simmer when hurt.

When Venus and Mars disagree

Many people have Venus and Mars in quite different signs, which can create interesting inner tension. Someone with Venus in Cancer and Mars in Aquarius might long for cosy emotional security yet pursue partners in a detached, unconventional way — confusing both themselves and the people they date.

Recognising this split is often a relief. It explains why what you want and how you chase it do not always line up.

Why Venus stays close to your Sun

Because Venus orbits between Earth and the Sun, it never appears more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. That means your Venus is always in your Sun sign or within two signs either side — five possibilities in all.

Mars has no such restriction. It can be in any sign relative to your Sun, and it moves slowly enough that your birth date usually pins it down even without a birth time.

Comparing two charts

In synastry — the comparison of two charts — astrologers look at how one person’s Venus relates to the other’s Mars. When one person’s Venus and the other’s Mars share an element or form harmonious angles, attraction is traditionally said to flow easily. Tension between them can create sparks that need careful handling.

Synastry is a rich topic with real limits, which we explore in our guide to comparing two charts fairly.

Beyond romance

Venus also shapes friendships, aesthetics and spending on pleasure; Mars shapes ambition, exercise and how you assert yourself at work. Reading them only for love leaves out half the story.
